Natalie Board, Counsellor

Hi, I'm Natalie

I'm a Level 2 registered counsellor with the Australian Counselling Association, and I hold a Master of Counselling from the University of Canberra.

As a counsellor, my focus is on listening to you and respecting your story. My work integrates person-centred therapy and other humanistic approaches with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness and creativity.

I understand that when you're used to supporting others, it can be unfamiliar, even uncomfortable, to recognise your needs as important too. In our work together, I can help you explore what it means to be you, and to experience what it feels like to be supported.

Along with my professional qualifications, I bring to counselling diverse experiences in homeschooling, parenting after separation, creating alternative family structures, caring for elderly parents and living overseas. I know what it feels like to support others, and I honour the commitment you've made to the important people in your life.

Life is stressful…

Even more so when you feel like you're the person keeping everyone else in your life afloat. Maybe you're stuck in a relationship pattern that you recognise but can't seem to change? Maybe you're waking up at night going over the same old stories again and again? Maybe you sense a whole lot of feelings that you push away by picking up your phone whenever you have a spare minute?

Whatever challenges you're facing, counselling offers you the time and space to explore what is most important to you, to gain some understanding of why you might feel the way you do, and to develop strategies and skills to help you create the life you want to live.

Questions

What happens in the sessions?

Counselling is your time to express what's on your mind — whether that's an ongoing issue or something that just came up that day. In the first session, I might ask more questions than you expect, as we get to know each other and decide how we can best work together. As well as talk therapy, we may also explore creative activities, mindfulness exercises and other therapy skills in our sessions.

How many sessions will I need?

You may prefer to start with just a couple of sessions, or decide to explore an issue more deeply over a longer period. You can also decide whether you attend weekly, fortnightly or monthly. In our first session, we can make a plan for the number and frequency of sessions that might be helpful, and review that as we go.

Will I feel better (or different) immediately?

Counselling is like any relationship — getting to know each other takes time. Sometimes talking about issues or expressing emotions you've been holding onto can feel uncomfortable in the beginning. It's my job to help you feel relaxed and supported so you get the most out of our sessions.

Are our sessions private?

Privacy and confidentiality are important commitments in counselling. We'll talk more about that in our first session and discuss any questions you have. You can read my Privacy policy here and my Terms and conditions here.

How do I book?

Bookings are managed through the Client portal. If you are a new client, you'll be prompted to create a log in. You are welcome to book a free introductory 15-minute online call so we can get to know each other. If you are an existing client, you can book your session here.

How much do sessions cost?

The standard rate for 1-hour counselling sessions is $100. If you are receiving Centrelink benefits or are experiencing financial difficulties, the rate is $60. There is no need to provide a concession card or other evidence.

How do I pay?

You can pay for your session using your credit card through the Client portal. An invoice will be available as soon as you have made your booking and payment is due at the end of your session. You may also choose to pay upfront at the time of booking.

How do I prepare for my sessions?

Counselling sessions are online, so you will need access to a connected device (phone, computer, tablet) as well as a comfortable private space where you can talk freely and won't be interrupted. I will send you a link before each session. If you need to bring any supplies for a creative activity, I'll let you know ahead of time. Contact me if you have any difficulties checking in.

What if I need to cancel?

You are welcome to cancel or change your appointment through the Client portal if the time no longer suits you. Please do so at least 24 hours before so I can re-arrange my schedule. I do understand that emergencies and unexpected situations can happen at the last minute, so if that is the case, please email me at natalie@natalieboard.com.au. If not, you may be charged 50% of the session fee if you do not attend.
